Swivel mirror swung out from inside a wardrobe

Where to put a mirror in or on a wardrobe

Mirror sliding doors, a swivel mirror that hides inside the robe, a fixed full-length mirror on a panel or walk-in end wall: which suits your room.

Short answer: there are four places for a mirror. A mirror sliding door on the front, which also makes the room feel larger. A swivel mirror inside the robe, which hides when not in use. A fixed mirror panel on a side return or the end wall of a walk-in. And a mirror on the inside of a hinged door. Choose on whether you want the mirror on show, and on how much wall you have.

Mirror sliding door

A full-height mirror on one or more of the sliding doors.

  • Best for: small or dark bedrooms, kids’ rooms, anyone who wants a full-length mirror and has nowhere else for it.
  • Effect on the room: larger and lighter, because the mirror reflects the window.
  • Options: silver, bronze or grey mirror; framed or frameless; one door or all.
  • Think twice: if the wardrobe faces the bed and you would rather not see yourself from it, put the mirror on the end door only.

Our door comparison covers mirror against glass and panel.

Swivel mirror

A full-length mirror on a pivoting arm, fixed inside the wardrobe at the end of a bay. Swing it out to use it, swing it back to hide it.

  • Best for: wardrobes with panel or glass doors where you do not want a mirror on the outside; walk-ins without a spare wall.
  • Space: needs a bay about 150mm wider to house the arm, and room in front of the robe to swing into.
  • Effect on the room: none when closed. It is the invisible option.

Fixed mirror panel

A mirror fixed to a flat surface: the side return of a built-in, the end wall of a walk-in, the back of a wardrobe island.

  • Best for: walk-ins, where the end wall is often the right place; a built-in with a side return facing the room.
  • Size: full-length is 1,500 to 1,800mm tall, at least 400mm wide, bottom edge about 300mm off the floor.
  • Effect on the room: a walk-in end-wall mirror makes the walk-in look twice as long.

Mirror inside a hinged door

A mirror fixed to the inside face of a hinged wardrobe door.

  • Best for: hinged robes in traditional rooms where a mirror on the outside would not suit.
  • Use: open the door, use the mirror, close it.
  • Think twice: the door must open fully and stay open; a soft-close hinge with a stay helps.

Safety and care

Wardrobe mirrors are safety-backed: if broken, the pieces stay on the backing. Cleaning is a glass cleaner sprayed on a cloth, not the mirror. Our care guide has the details.

Lighting the mirror

A mirror in a dark corner is not much use. An LED strip above a swivel mirror’s bay or beside an end-wall mirror lights your face rather than the back of your head. See our lighting guide.

At the consult

Say where you dress and where you would like to check an outfit. The designer places the mirror where it works in the room, whether that is a door, a swivel inside the robe or the end wall of a walk-in. Mirrors are fitted as part of the wardrobe, made in our Blacktown factory and installed by the licensed installer who designed it.

Questions people ask about this

Anything else? Ask your designer at your onsite consult.

What is a swivel mirror?

A full-length mirror on a pivoting arm fixed inside the wardrobe at the end of a bay. It swings out into the room when you need it and swings back inside, flat against the side of the bay, when you do not. The outside of the wardrobe stays as it was.

Does a mirror door make a bedroom feel bigger?

Yes, noticeably. A full-height mirror reflects the room and the window, so a small bedroom reads as larger and lighter. It is the main reason mirror doors are chosen for kids' rooms and compact bedrooms.

Can a mirror go inside a hinged door?

Yes. A full-length mirror fixed to the inside of a hinged door is a traditional and practical option, with the door opened for use and closed to hide it.
