Toongabbie is one of the older suburbs in our area: post-war fibro and brick-veneer homes from the 1950s and 1960s on 550 to 700 square metre blocks, with three bedrooms, 2.4 metre ceilings and a wardrobe recess in each bedroom that was built for a robe that stopped at door height. The suburb is changing quickly, with a lot of the original homes replaced by duplexes, and granny flats added behind the ones that remain.

In the original homes, the job is a full replacement into the existing recess: out with the timber-and-chipboard robe, in with a floor-to-ceiling sliding robe and internals that use the height. The recesses are often deeper than they look once the old frame comes out.

In the duplexes and granny flats, the bedrooms are compact and the builder-supplied robe is doors with a rail behind. A re-fit of the internals, or a replacement sliding robe across the full wall, makes a small room work.

Our old wardrobe is timber-framed and seems built into the wall. Can it be removed?

Yes. Post-war robes are usually a timber frame with chipboard or masonite panels, fixed into the recess. We remove and dispose of it, and the new robe is built into the same opening. If the recess walls need patching where the frame was fixed, we tell you at the consult.

Do you do granny flats in Toongabbie?

Yes, and it is a common request. A custom robe that uses the full wall and height makes a real difference in a small granny-flat bedroom.
