The older cottages are interesting jobs. Many have never had a built-in, so the robe is designed into an alcove or across a wall, in hinged doors that suit the period and to a ceiling height that can be 2.7 to 3 metres. The 1960s and 70s brick homes are the familiar replacement of an original robe into its recess.
In the new estate homes it is the builder fit-out again: the walk-in with its single rail re-fitted properly, and the sliding robes given internals that suit the kids using them.

Our weatherboard cottage has no built-in wardrobe. Where would one go?
Usually across the wall opposite the window, or into an alcove beside a chimney breast, which older homes often have. The designer looks at the room with you and finds the wall that gives the most storage with the least impact on the room, and the doors are chosen to suit the house.
Do uneven floors and walls in an old house cause problems?
They are normal in homes of this age, and the cabinetry is measured, levelled and scribed to them onsite. A custom robe is the right answer in an old house precisely because nothing in it is square.
