Walk-in wardrobe designed from an onsite measure

What happens at an onsite wardrobe consultation

What the designer measures, what they will ask, what to have ready and what you get afterwards, so a wardrobe consultation is worth the hour.

Short answer: at an onsite consultation the designer measures the opening, looks at what you own, talks through how you use the wardrobe, shows you colour samples in your room, and draws up a layout and quote for that specific wardrobe. To get the most from it, know roughly what you own, have an idea of your budget, and be ready to choose a colour.

Who comes

At Reflections, the designer who visits is also the licensed installer. The same person measures the room, designs the wardrobe, oversees it in the factory and fits it. There is no handover between a sales rep and a tradesperson, so nothing is lost between the measure and the install.

What they measure

  • The opening: width at several points, height at several points, depth. Walls in older homes are rarely square, and the wardrobe is made to the real shape.
  • Skirting, cornice and architraves: so the cabinetry is scribed around them, or they are cut back cleanly.
  • Bulkheads, nib walls, power points and switches in or near the opening.
  • The door swing and the bed position, which decide sliding or hinged.
  • Access: stairs, hallways, lifts, so the panels can be brought in on install day.

What they ask

  • What is in the wardrobe now, and what is not fitting.
  • How many of you share it.
  • Long hanging versus short hanging, folded clothes, shoes.
  • Whether the old wardrobe is to be removed and disposed of.
  • Sliding or hinged, mirror or panel, and whether you want to match other joinery.
  • Any extras: jewellery drawer, pant rack, swivel mirror, lighting.
  • Any dates to work to.

What to have ready

  1. A sense of what you own. Our internals planning guide walks through a quick count.
  2. A budget range, even a rough one. It lets the designer suggest where to spend and where to save.
  3. Photos or examples of wardrobes you like, if you have them.
  4. A decision on colour, or at least a shortlist. The designer brings samples; holding them against your wall in your light settles it.
  5. Any strata or building rules if you are in an apartment.

What you get

A layout for the wardrobe (bays, rails, shelves, drawers, doors), and a quote for that layout with the door type, finish, internals, extras and removal of the old wardrobe itemised. No obligation.

Questions worth asking

  • What board thickness is the carcass?
  • What are the sliding doors made from, and what track do they run on?
  • Are the drawers on ball-bearing soft-close runners?
  • Who installs it, and is it the person I am talking to?
  • What does the workmanship guarantee cover, and for how long?
  • Is removal of the old wardrobe included?
  • Is GST included in the quote?

Our guide to choosing a wardrobe company goes into these.

After the consult

Take your time with the quote. When you are ready, confirm and the job goes into the factory schedule. The next visit is install day.

Questions people ask about this

Anything else? Ask your designer at your onsite consult.

Do I need to tidy the wardrobe before the consult?

No. The designer needs to see what you own and how much of it there is. A full wardrobe is more useful than an empty one. You will need to empty it before install day, not before the consult.

Is there a sales pitch?

At Reflections the person who visits is the designer and licensed installer, not a sales rep. They measure, design and quote the job they will build and fit themselves. If a smaller or simpler wardrobe would serve you better, they will say so.

How long does it take?

Usually under an hour for one wardrobe, longer for a whole house. Allow a bit more if you want to go through colour samples properly.
